Inter-VLAN Routing
Inter-VLAN routing allows devices in different VLANs to communicate using a Layer 3 device.
Updated: 2026-03-05
Definition
Because VLANs are separate broadcast domains, traffic between VLANs requires routing.
This is done via a router (router-on-a-stick) or a Layer 3 switch using SVIs.
Key points
- Requires L3 device (router or L3 switch)
- Uses gateways (SVI or router subinterface)
- ACLs can control inter-VLAN access
Common mistakes
- Assuming VLANs can talk without routing.
- Missing or wrong default gateway on hosts.
